Once the system is at full capacity, it implies 450 DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) Simulcast VHF and UHF repeaters and 22 TETRA sites.

SELEX Communications won, as mandatory of an Enterprise Temporary Group, a 20-million-euro tender of Lombardy (Italy) to implement a regional radio communication system, aiming at managing emergencies and Civil Protection interforce headquarters activities.

This system is going into operation in 2012 and will be fully operating for the EXPO 2015, which will draw many visitors, especially during opening and closing ceremonies.

The Enterprise Temporary Group - including Telecom Italia, GEG, Beta 80 and Larimart (a SELEX Communications company) - will deal with technological enlargement and update of radio networks, which ensure regional radio-connections for Civil Protection, emergency medical service 118, fire fighting service and safety. Furthermore, a radio link backbone, covering the whole territory and connecting broadcasting and operations centers of the radio-communications system, will be strengthened.

Operations Center will be located in Milan. The site will coordinate rescue missions of the whole region and will be able to be connected to radio networks belonging to other Bodies involved in emergency operations, in order to guarantee interoperability and logistic support for interventions, especially in the most serious cases.

Once the system is at full capacity, it implies 450 DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) Simulcast VHF and UHF repeaters and 22 TETRA sites - supplied by SELEX Communications - , 90 radio links and thousands of mobile transreceiving terminals, working both on board and in fixed posts.

This solution represents one of the most all-round, innovative and widespread regional systems, based on a variety of technologies aiming at meeting the different operational needs of thoseservices which deal with the management of emergencies and citizens' safety.

In Italy, SELEX Communications is implementing a national radio mobile network based on TETRA standard. Besides Lombardy, SELEX Communications' TETRA has already been adopted by the regions of Veneto, Emilia Romagna and the municipality of Cagliari. Moreover, TETRA is fully operating in the regions of Basilicata, Campania, Calabria and in most of Piedmont, within TETRA Inter-Polices Program (PIT), a national network for Police Forces. In the world TETRA radio mobile systems are about 150, supplied in more than 30 countries.
