Serbian  First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic and Israeli Minister for Public Security of the State Yitzhak Aharonovitch yesterday stressed that cooperation between the two ministries is good and that Israel endorses Serbia in its efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following a meeting with Aharonovitch, Dacic thanked the Israeli Minister for his country’s support to Serbia regarding Kosovo-Metohija, adding that Serbia also endorses Israel in the resolution of similar issues.

Dacic underlined that police cooperation between the two countries is also good, voicing his hope that it will continue to be so, especially in terms of fighting terrorism, crime and illegal drug trade.

Recalling that the two ministries signed an agreement on cooperation in these areas, Dacic underscored that there is a series of joint actions and projects, including an exchange of experience in the training of counter-terrorist units, IT technologies, the TETRA system, witness protection and emergency situations.

He observed that Serbia and the Serbian people feel that Israel and the Jewish people are among their closest friends, adding that the history of the two countries was similar, bearing in mind the difficulties the two peoples underwent during World War Two.

Serbia is dedicated to maintaining good relations with the Jewish community in the country and is investing every effort to prevent any incidents of an international or inter-religious character, Dacic underlined.

Aharonovitch’s first visit to Serbia is an indicator of the good cooperation between the two ministries and of overall relations between the two states.

Aharonovitch stressed that in the period ahead he will continue to support the friendship between Israel and Serbia.

The Israeli government endorses Serbia in its efforts to retain Kosovo-Metohija, and on the other hand, it expects Serbia’s support in Israel’s dispute with the Palestinian self-government, he said.

The Palestinians want to declare independence through the UN Security Council, but we believe that disputes should be resolved by agreement and we condemn unilateral moves, Aharonovitch observed.

During his visit to Belgrade, Aharonovitch will visit the Ministry of the Interior’s Liaison Centre and meet with representatives from the justice ministry, while tomorrow he will hold a meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Aharonovich yesterday visited the Sector for Analytics, Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Ministry of the Interior, where the Israeli delegation was presented with the operation of TETRA centre.

Tetra system is the most advanced radio system and Serbia is one of the few in Europe that applies it.

Aharonovich yesterday also attended the demonstration exercise of the elite Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ).

The Israeli Public Security Minister will tomorrow meet with Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
