450connect has announced the commissioning of its 1,000th radio site, marking 90% geographic coverage of Germany with its dedicated 450 MHz communication network for critical infrastructure. This development strengthens Germany’s preparedness against emergencies by ensuring robust, autonomous communication capabilities when conventional public networks fail.
Events such as the 2021 Ahr Valley floods and the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout have highlighted the vulnerabilities of public networks and the vital importance of an independent, crisis-proof communication infrastructure. The 450 MHz network is purpose-built to maintain operational continuity for essential sectors, including energy, water, transport, logistics, and healthcare.
Joachim Groß, Chief Technology Officer at 450connect, stated:
“We are now on the final stretch – a remarkable achievement by our entire team. Covering 90% of Germany ensures reliable communication when it matters most, both in routine operations and during national emergencies.”
Aligned with the Federal Government’s national resilience strategy, the 450connect network provides secure voice and data services during extreme events, featuring 72-hour blackout resilience. Even in the event of widespread power outages, the network remains fully operational to support crisis response teams and maintain essential services.
Offering advanced capabilities such as secure operational communication, smart metering, and smart grid control, the 450 MHz network provides a critical technological foundation for digitalisation and decarbonisation in essential sectors.
“The energy transition depends on secure and resilient communication networks,” added Groß. “We ensure that these networks perform even under the most demanding conditions.”
