L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) has expanded its popular family of XL Project 25 (P25) radios to include the new XL ExtremeTM 400, the first and only handheld radio designed to the latest National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

The XL-Extreme is engineered to withstand the most rigorous standards ever subjected to handheld radios for use by emergency responders. The requirements of the NFPA 1802 standard, which was published in January 2021, include extreme temperatures—a 1,700-degree flame for 10 seconds while being fully operational; a drop from 3 meters onto concrete; and repeated 350 degree heat followed by immersion in 2 meters of water. The combination of intense heat, shock and extreme environmental conditions is intended to simulate the rigors that fire radios may be subjected to and expected to operate through.

The XL-Extreme is the first and only radio that is designed with the NFPA 1802 standard in mind, featuring heat-resistant thermal materials, a reinforced seal design, and unique thermal-rates displays and speakers. The radio has a new heavy-duty, glove-friendly keypad, knobs, a large emergency button and an ambient temperature sensor. L3Harris’ unique visual zone detection indication, provides quick visual confirmation that all users are on the same group or channel. The XL-Extreme delivers loud clear audio with industry-leading noise cancellation, operates over AT&T® or Verizon® networks and includes Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® integration.

“We listened to our customers and manufactured a radio that was designed to meet and, in many cases,, even exceed the NFPA standards,” said Nino DiCosmo, President, Public Safety and Professional Communications, L3Harris. “By leveraging our Space and Airborne Systems business’ expertise in engineering heat resistant technology for satellites and tapping the software defined expertise in our military tactical radios business, we built an extreme radio that is designed and built to surpass anything available on the market today.”
