Final approval has been given by the American National Standards Institute for an American Standard (ANS) called "Managing Operational Overload in the Emergency Communications Centers." This new standard was created by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International.

In today's world, ECCs often have to deal with situations where their workload could overwhelm their staff. This standard gives ECCs advice on how to plan for, avoid, and deal with operational overload.

“ECCs can find themselves working multiple incidents which often burdens personnel on duty,” said Jason Kern, President of APCO International. “This standard gives agencies the tools to manage multiple incidents effectively and efficiently while keeping the safety of the community and responders first and foremost in their function as a first responder.”
