Some 17 TCCA and ATF members supported this Australian TETRA tour with product presentations, case studies and equipment displays that generated a lot of interest and provided positive feedback from each of the events.

The TETRA + Critical Communications Association (TCCA) and the Australasian TETRA Forum (ATF) organised their first jointly organised Australian TETRA tour. The 3 well attended one-day conferences and exhibitions began with a great event in Perth on the 6th of September introduced by Phil Kidner of the TCCA and Anton Abrahams of the ATF followed by the other events in Brisbane and Sydney, on the 11th and 13th of September.

TETRA was introduced in Australia in 2007 but its implementation was restricted to 800 Mhz. With the introduction of the new Australian UHF band plan some 2 years ago the opportunity for TETRA has been greatly expanded particularly with critical radio communication users in the large Australian mining and services markets in Western Australia and Queensland.

Currently there are some 60 TETRA systems in operation or WIP in Australia that include long distance private freight rail projects, open cut iron ore and coal mining projects, aluminium smelters and LNG pipe lines. TETRA systems are also utilised in the major container ports, used by local government agencies and introduced in public transport (bus transport and light rail).

Also the availability of ATEX/IECEx certified intrinsically safe TETRA products provided growth in the Oil and Gas and related industries where such products are mandatory.

Australia is an island continent and the world's sixth largest country (7,682,300 sq km). Lying between the Indian and Pacific oceans, the country is approximately 4,000 km from east to west and 3,200 km from north to south, with a coastline 36,735 km long. To put this into perspective it took the TCCA members and other delegates some 4 hours flying time and 2 hours time difference to fly from Perth to Brisbane across the continent from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

The Australasian TETRA Forum currently has 21 members from around Australia and is actively involved in promoting the technology in Australia,  www.tetraforum.com.au
