Source: MCCResources

It took four years of bureaucratic deals before the Gujarat Police could start to use the new TETRA radio communications system

The Gujarat Police will move from an old VHF analogue system to the new digital TETRA system. Currently the Police is in the final stage of adopting TETRA and a first trial run will most likely start around the February-March 2015 timeframe.

The new communications system will be implemented in four Police Commissionerates & Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara & Gandhinagar district police jurisdiction.

The new light weight handheld TETRA radios will have built‐in GPS and a long battery life, in order to accomodate the police officer on the street when he is on duty. The TETRA system and handheld radio will enable police to communicate securely and will also enable the police to to send messages/images along with the position and a time stamp of the network. This time stamp cannot be tampered.

The total cost for the project is expected to be around Rs.400 crore. At present, other cities in India such as Delhi, Hyderabad and a few other major cities have already started to use TETRA.
