Samsung Issues Whitepaper on the Power of ATAK for Situational Awareness & Critical Communications to Enhance Public Safety

Source: The Critical Communications Review | Gert Jan Wolf editor

Samsung announced a new situationalawareness whitepaper that was created with the input of multiple partners/customers in the firstresponder industry. It features multiple use cases for fire and law enforcement including S&R, wildland fires and more.

Real-time information sharing, response coordination, and anticipatory action have been taken to the next level by agencies using ATAK. ATAK is a powerful application that was developed by the U.S. Air Force Research Lab in 2010 to support military special operations. A civilian version became available to government agencies in 2013

In short, ATAK is a collaborative mobile app that tracks team member locations in real-time and facilitates data sharing for photos, videos, detailed maps with geo-fencing, and secure texts. Data from multiple sources can be layered onto one 3D map and users can share mission-essential information – including real-time camera feeds during critical incidents. ATAK can serve as a powerful command center for field personnel, allowing them to see all relevant information on a single pane of glass, providing enhanced situational awareness and expanded operational capabilities.

Furthermore ATAK uses a variety of plug-ins to provide specific capabilities. New plug-ins as well as expanded versions of existing plug-ins continue to be added due to the rapidly growing user base.

The result is a dramatic improvement in both situational awareness and safety for field personnel as well as improvement in overall operational effectiveness for organizations. Leveraging LMR to extend ATAK functionality into remote areas is an important step forward and one that agencies should evaluate long before the need is demonstrated by an actual event or tragedy.
