Codan's Communications Division Anchors Group Expansion as Headcount Quadruples in Four Years

With a communications-led revenue base, a deepening R&D pipeline, and an expanding global presence, the group appears well-positioned to sustain its trajectory in the critical communications and defence electronics markets.

Adelaide-based Codan Limited has emerged as one of the more compelling growth stories in the global communications technology sector, with Managing Director and CEO Alf Ianniello outlining an ambitious forward trajectory following the release of the company's February 2025 half-year financial results.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Chris Conway - Editor of Livewire Markets, Ianniello reflected on a period of significant organisational transformation.

"We've gone from 250 people four years ago to over a thousand,"

he noted — a more than fourfold increase in headcount that reflects not only organic growth but a series of strategic acquisitions that have broadened Codan's global footprint and product capabilities.

Central to the company's expansion is its Communications division, which now stands as the largest segment within the Codan Group by revenue. The division, which supplies software-defined radios and communications solutions to defence, government, and commercial customers globally, has benefited from sustained investment in both product development and market reach. For the current financial year, Codan is targeting revenue growth of between 15 and 20 percent in this segment — a step up from the 10 to 15 percent ranges the company had historically guided to.

Ianniello was direct about the importance of consistency in delivering on those targets. "The number one thing that we've done really well is the consistency in hitting those ranges," he said, pointing to a track record that has seen the division regularly meet or exceed its growth guidance.

A significant driver of that consistency has been Codan's commitment to research and development. The company has maintained substantial R&D investment as a strategic priority, an approach that Ianniello describes as foundational to the group's competitive positioning. Recent outputs from that investment pipeline include upgraded software-defined radios targeting the unmanned systems market — a fast-growing segment within the broader defence and public safety communications ecosystem — reflecting Codan's capacity to identify emerging application areas and bring purpose-built solutions to market.

Ianniello characterised the company's ability to translate R&D investment into commercially viable, market-ready products as one of Codan's defining strengths.

"One of the great superpowers of Codan is the ability to get an idea and commercialise it and sell it and have that technological moat around us,"

.. he observed.

Looking ahead, the company continues to prioritise acquisitions within the communications sector, particularly in the northern hemisphere, with the goal of strengthening product roadmaps and extending market share in key geographies. Seven acquisitions have been completed over the past four years, with further transactions actively being evaluated.

As Codan continues to scale, the internal challenge of building the operational infrastructure to match its growth ambitions will be a key area of focus over the next 12 to 18 months. With a communications-led revenue base, a deepening R&D pipeline, and an expanding global presence, the group appears well-positioned to sustain its trajectory in the critical communications and defence electronics markets.
