Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

BAI Communications (BAI) today announced the appointment of Mat Jones as Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 January 2027. Mr Jones will lead the company through its next phase of growth, underpinned by recent major contract wins including Sydney Metro West, the strategic acquisition of Titan ICT, management of the NSW Public Safety Network, and established long-term partnerships with Australia’s broadcasters.

BAI is a leading provider of mission-critical communications infrastructure, delivering solutions across broadcast, public safety, rail infrastructure, mining and energy, enterprise and emerging 5G services.

Following a global search, the Board has appointed Mat Jones for his proven ability to deliver growth, innovation and customer outcomes in complex, digital infrastructure environments.

Bart Vogel, Chair of the Board, said: “Mat brings the vision and proven operational capability required to execute our growth strategy and capitalise on significant opportunities across our core business and into emerging infrastructure sectors. His experience will be invaluable as we continue to expand.”

Mat Jones, incoming Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am excited to join BAI at a pivotal time. BAI is a dynamic digital infrastructure business that has earned the trust to deliver the country’s most essential communications infrastructure, from the radio communications systems powering Sydney Metro West to long-standing work with Australia’s broadcasters, the NSW Telco Authority, and the mobile operators. I look forward to working with the Board, executive team, and most importantly, BAI employees, to realise the significant opportunities ahead.”

Jones has extensive experience in the sector with a track record of excellent customer delivery and adding significant value to the digital infrastructure businesses he has been involved with. Mr Jones previously advised Morrisons Bank on its acquisition of approximately 8,000 towers from Telstra to form Amplitel. He then served as Chief Operating Officer of Amplitel, where he helped transform the business into a leading tower company supporting the mobile and enterprise sectors.

To ensure business continuity, Peter Lambourne will remain as Chief Executive Officer through 31 December 2026 and upon transition will support the new CEO and facilitate knowledge transfer. The executive team remains in place, providing seamless continuity. The Board and shareholder structures remain unchanged, with continued backing from majority shareholder CPP Investments and minority shareholder AIMCo.
