i.safe MOBILE Launches IS380.1: Bridging the Gap Between Traditional Radio and Modern Mobile Networks

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

i.safe MOBILE has announced the launch of the IS380.1, a 4G radio device that combines the familiar form factor of conventional two-way radios with the advanced capabilities of modern cellular networks. Certified for Zone 1/21 hazardous industrial areas and running on the company's IS-OS 16 operating system (based on Android™), the IS380.1 is designed to serve as a transitional bridge for organisations moving from Private Mobile Radio (PMR) systems toward digital network solutions.

Effortless Digital Transformation

The IS380.1 addresses one of the most significant challenges facing industries that depend on radio communications: how to embrace digital transformation without disrupting established workflows or requiring extensive retraining. By maintaining the ergonomics, button layout, and operational feel of a traditional two-way radio, the device allows field workers to continue using the interface they already know — while gaining access to the worldwide coverage and advanced features of 4G networks, including Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) and Mission Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT).

"We've removed the barrier to adoption by maintaining the familiar radio design and operation that users know and trust," said Javier Esparza, Sales Manager Critical Communication Europe at i.safe MOBILE. "The IS380.1 simply extends their existing capabilities beyond the limitations of conventional radio infrastructure. It's the natural first step towards comprehensive digitalisation in professional communications."

The device is positioned as an ideal solution for logistics and warehousing, rail transport, port operations, manufacturing, and construction — sectors that have traditionally relied on TETRA or conventional PMR networks. Emergency services, blue-light organisations, and defence and public safety agencies also stand to benefit significantly.

Designed for Seamless Integration

Supporting 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, the IS380.1 is engineered to slot into existing communication ecosystems with minimal disruption. Its classic two-way radio design includes a large tactile PTT key positioned for natural thumb operation, a programmable rotary switch for channel selection or volume adjustment, and an emergency SOS button located next to the external antenna. A touchscreen interface adds flexibility without compromising the familiar user experience.

The device's housing replicates the stable form factor of conventional radios, enabling secure placement on work surfaces and comfortable handheld use throughout extended shifts. A front-facing amplified loudspeaker delivers strong audio clarity in noisy industrial environments, supported by advanced noise cancellation technology.

Compatibility with professional audio accessories is maintained through the 13-pin ISM interface, supporting the IS-RSMG2.1 remote speaker microphone, IS-HS1.1 headset, and IS-HDHS1x.1 heavy-duty headset. Existing accessory investments therefore remain fully functional, and desktop and multi-charger options complete the accessory offering.

Unified Communication Across Networks

Through third-party Radio over IP (RoIP) gateways, the IS380.1 integrates into unified communication solutions that connect existing VHF/UHF radio networks with cellular Push-to-Talk applications. This means field workers using the IS380.1 can communicate with colleagues still using conventional two-way radios, while simultaneously benefiting from the extended range and feature set of cellular connectivity.

This dual capability enables organisations to modernise their communications infrastructure gradually, protecting previous equipment investments while pursuing a phased digitalisation strategy. The device comes pre-installed with i.safe MOBILE's App World, a curated platform providing secure access to verified applications for PTT and Lone Worker Protection (LWP).

Built for Demanding Environments

The IS380.1 is certified to IP68 standards for dust and water ingress protection, and carries MIL-STD 810H certification covering shock, vibration, and extreme temperature performance — meeting the same rugged reliability standards professionals expect from traditional radio equipment. A removable battery design supports continuous operational readiness through quick battery swaps.

The device supports international frequency bands, making it suitable for global deployment, with local certifications available according to specific regional requirements.

The IS380.1 is available now.
