This week Monday marked the launch of a private 5G network in the Tacoma Tideflats, Washington, as a pilot initiative to demonstrate the potential of 5G innovation. A collaboration between the 5G Open Innovation Lab, Edge Cluster, Washington Maritime Blue, the City of Tacoma, and additional partners resulted in the development of the network. At present, the organization provides assistance to the following five local businesses: Motive Power Marine, Tote Maritime Alaska, Silverback Marine, Trident Seafoods, and SAFE Boats International.

Cost and effort are reduced by utilizing existing infrastructure, such as utility poles, in the network. It furnishes primary protection for the five clients situated on the East Blair Peninsula, the precise location of their operations. Subsequent to its establishment, the network may be expanded to accommodate additional customers throughout the Tideflats.

Evergreen Manufacturing Growth Grant funding was provided by the Washington Department of Commerce for the initiative. The objective is to establish a technological framework that can provide assistance to endeavors outlined in a feasibility study conducted in 2022. These endeavors may consist of enhancing infrastructure, prioritizing safety, and concentrating on health.

The potential of the network to enhance data sharing and foster innovation in the maritime sectors of the Tideflats, as well as to position the area as a prominent hub for technological advancement and affordable employment, was emphasized by the partners. The Commissioner of the Port of Tacoma commended the innovation and eagerly awaits the results reported by the consortium of port tenants.

The 5G Open Innovation Lab serves as an interconnected space where investors, entrepreneurs, enterprises, and technology platforms come together to collectively devise innovative edge computing and 5G solutions. It has attracted more than one hundred businesses that have raised nearly $2.1 billion in funding in the past four years.
