FCC opens up part of 900 MHz for new broadband applications

The US Federal Communications Commission has adopted a new plan to open up the 900 MHz band to new applications in critical communications. While the band is currently reserved for narrowband land mobile radio, the FCC wants to make 6 MHz of the low-band spectrum available for new wireless broadband services.

Transportation, utility, manufacturing, and petrochemical companies use the band at the moment for their radio communications. The FCC proposes to reserve 4 MHz for the existing services and make available licences on a county-by-county basis for the other 6 MHz. This transition will enable next-generation, mission-critical applications not available via current narrowband systems, such as private LTE networks, and help meet the evolving needs of industries, the FCC said.
