In December 2010, the Home Office in Uruguay decided to buy directly a new TETRA communication system for the Highway Patrol and Fire. In the first instance, the digital network of the Ministry of Interior worked only in the Metropolitan Area (Montevideo, Canelones and San Jose) and then spread to the rest of the country.

The system was implemented in 2012 and it now allows the Unified Command Center to identify, among other functions, which are the closest patrol to the scene reported using GPS and maps georeferencing to send the Highway Patrol and Fire services promptly to the area. In the past, this was not possible as these kind of communications was not coordinated as these services only used mobile phones.

According to police, there is scope for better police capitation on TETRA and in the coming months the police will develop courses to learn about the other possibilities of the system.
