The nationwide network rollout is divided in five geographical phases and Eltel is awarded phase 3, which is the largest phase containing approximately 470 sites in the west coast of Norway.

The Norwegian government is going ahead with the Public Safety Network project Nødnett. Motorola Solutions Norway has become the prime contractor and Eltel wins a position as their subcontractor. Eltel has been an implementation and operations partner in a similar project in Sweden for several years.

Motorola Solution (MSI) is the prime contractor and supplier of the TETRA technology. MSI took over as prime contractor from Nokia Siemens Networks in February 2012. The customer is the Norwegian government, represented by the Directorate for Emergency Communication (DNK).

Nødnett is a multi-agency digital radio communication system owned by the Norwegian state. DNK leads the development of the communication network for emergency and public safety services in Norway. The network will provide public safety communication for the police, fire and health agencies in Norway.

The nationwide network rollout is divided in five geographical phases and Eltel is awarded phase 3, which is the largest phase containing approximately 470 sites in the west coast of Norway. Prior to the new contract Eltel participated in a pilot in phase 0.

“The main reason for choosing Eltel is the current geographical presence and knowledge about the actual area and sites to be built,” says Harald Vassal, Project Director of Motorola Solutions. “There is also synergy with Eltel’s other maintenance agreements, which reduces the cost and improves the ability to keep a tight schedule. Size of company and expertise in telecommunication implementation are also important factors in partner selection.”

Eltel has previous experience in implementing TETRA networks in a consortium with Saab and Cassidian who completed the first national radio communications system in Sweden at the end of 2010. The system is also known as Rakel and it is governed by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. In August 2011 the consortium reported to have won extension to the operations and maintenance contract of Rakel till year 2015.
