450Mhz Alliance
In an effort to satisfy the growing demand for mission-critical connectivity and for energy grid digitalization, the 450 MHz Alliance has become the global voice for one of the most important frequency bands for utility and critical infrastructure operators.
The 450 MHz Alliance is formed of an industry group comprising of network operators, equipment suppliers and organizations in vertical markets that rely on machine-to-machine communications. The objective of the Alliance is to represent the 450 MHz ecosystem to industry and to regulators, create consensus views on spectrum policy and foster standards, guidelines and best practices to mature the market. The Alliance also uses working groups to aggregate supply and demand of 450 MHz equipment, creating economies of scale to make the technology commercially viable.
The physics case for the band is simple. Lower bands carry farther and better penetrate buildings and underground installations than higher bands, allowing wide-area coverage with far fewer sites. For utilities with assets located over rural and remote terrain, LTE450 implies lower costs and more resilient networks. LTE450 is particularly well-suited to smart metering, distribution automation, and demand response and supports deployment of LTE-M and NB-IoT IoT technologies and broadband services, with private deployments supporting priority, pre-emption, and end-to-end security.
A flagship example is in Germany, where 450connect is deploying an LTE450 network for energy and water industries across the whole of Germany, with Nokia as its technology partner.
The Alliance has also increased its global presence. In January 2025, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Utility Broadband Alliance to combine know-how on private LTE and the 450MHz spectrum. "The partnership will enable smarter energy ecosystems around the world," said 450 MHz Alliance Executive Chairman Gösta Kallner.
"The advocating role of the Alliance for spectrum is as relevant as ever as it is still available in some countries and the competition for sub-GHz frequencies continues."
Reasons to become a member of the 450Mhz Alliance:
- Development of spectrum and regulatory policy. The Alliance advocates for the 450 MHz ecosystem to regulators and industry groups. Its positions are shaped by members at a time when sub-GHz spectrum is being contested in many countries (for example, the recent debate in Brazil over allocation of the band).
- Establish standards and best practices. Its working groups' members participate in defining guidelines, processes and technical recommendations that shape the deployment of LTE450 and future 450 MHz technology.
- Effects of scale. The Alliance will match supply and demand for the 450 MHz equipment. For operators and utilities that means more options of devices and infrastructure at lower cost. For vendors, that means a wider and better-defined market to work with.
- Lessons learned from real-world deployment. Membership benefits for operators of 450 MHz networks (e.g., 450connect in Germany). That includes practical challenges such as migration of legacy field devices, network design, and security.
- Industry across-the-board visibility and partnerships. As a member of the Alliance, you have direct contact with carriers, manufacturers and utilities and the opportunity to participate in Alliance events, such as its annual conference. The Alliance partnered with Utility Broadband Alliance in 2025 to extend that network.
