Spark New Zealand and Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions have worked together to help Port Nelson overcome inconsistent Wi-Fi in its warehouses through a private 5G network.

The 5G+ Private Network Solution from Spark covers 30,000 square metres over three warehouses in Nelson and Blenheim, utilising Ericsson Private 5G to establish a high-availability core at Port Nelson that connects to small cell radios to boost coverage.

The port also deployed Ericsson Cradlepoint ruggedised R1900 routers to improve connectivity and tracking for its forklifts. By using the dual-sim functionality of the routers, the forklifts can switch to Spark’s public 5G network when they leave the coverage of the private network.

The solution was introduced as the import-export the port’s high-density block-stacking storage and complex site design created numerous Wi-Fi deadspots, forcing staff to alter their working methods to keep connected.
