Nokia and LMT Partner to Develop 5G-Based Tactical Communications System for Defense Use Across the Baltic Region
The partnership combines Nokia’s expertise in advanced radio technology with LMT’s extensive experience in defense applications.
Nokia and Latvian mobile operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons SIA (LMT) have announced a strategic collaboration to develop a 5G-based tactical communications system designed to enhance defense capabilities across the Baltic region.
The partnership combines Nokia’s expertise in advanced radio technology with LMT’s extensive experience in defense applications. Together, the companies aim to create a secure, high-capacity, and resilient network architecture tailored to mission-critical defense operations.
The system will enable real-time data exchange between sensors, unmanned platforms, and command units—significantly improving coordination and situational awareness in tactical environments. Designed with scalability and interoperability in mind, the solution integrates emerging technologies such as autonomous systems and AI-driven analytics to support the evolving demands of modern defense forces.
Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense, Nokia said:
Tactical defense systems harness the high speed, low latency, and robust connectivity of 5G networks to enhance real-time operations on the battlefield. Our joint solution with LMT supports the modernization of military capabilities, enabling faster decision-making, seamless communication, and the integration of advanced technologies across tactical environments.
This collaboration marks an important step in strengthening the region’s defense communications infrastructure and underscores the growing role of 5G technology in future military operations.
