GCF, Sateliot and Nordic Semiconductor Announce Breakthrough in LEO IoT Connectivity

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

The Global Certification Forum (GCF) has confirmed a significant breakthrough in satellite IoT technology as members @Sateliot and @Nordic Semiconductor have successfully conducted field tests of the world’s first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) chipset/module designed for full compatibility with Sateliot’s standard LEO constellation.

This achievement establishes a new benchmark for the satellite communications industry, marking a critical advancement in the development and certification of LEO-capable IoT devices. It highlights the progress toward seamless integration between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, enabling continuous global IoT connectivity.

Marco Guadalupi, CTO and Co-Founder at Sateliot, lauded the milestone, stating:

“This successful field test marks a turning point for the satellite IoT ecosystem. By combining innovation with rigorous certification, we are making LEO connectivity accessible and reliable for devices across the globe.”

GCF has actively supported developments in Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology since 2024, incorporating work items based on 3GPP standards to ensure a robust certification framework for emerging satellite-enabled solutions. With this latest success, momentum is building toward the widespread certification and deployment of NTN-capable devices, addressing the growing demand for global IoT coverage in sectors such as logistics, agriculture, transportation and environmental monitoring.

This collaboration between GCF, Sateliot and Nordic Semiconductor demonstrates the industry’s commitment to innovation, interoperability and standardisation. By achieving this world-first compatibility test, the organisations have paved the way for faster commercial adoption of satellite IoT technologies and reinforced the strategic role of LEO constellations in expanding global connectivity.

As the ecosystem continues to evolve, GCF remains committed to enabling certification pathways that support reliable, secure and scalable device integration across both terrestrial and satellite networks.
