City of Corning Enhances Public Safety and Connectivity with FirstNet

The City of Corning NY is strengthening public safety operations and improving communications citywide by adopting FirstNet, the nationwide broadband network built exclusively for first responders.

“FirstNet allows us to stream body-cam video from officers in the field, connect mobile data terminals in police cruisers and fire engines, and keep our public works department fully integrated into emergency operations,” said Corning City Manager Mark Ryckman. “It’s a smart, cost-effective way to modernize communications while keeping our community safe.”

The Corning Fire Department is using FirstNet for computer-aided dispatch, mapping, and real-time access to hydrant data and preplans. High-Power User Equipment (HPUE) expands coverage into surrounding rural areas, ensuring firefighters stay connected during mutual-aid responses. The department is also exploring biometric monitoring and location-tracking technologies to enhance responder safety.

FirstNet’s priority and preemption features ensure first responders remain connected even during network congestion, while the city benefits from cost savings by gradually phasing out traditional LMR systems.

“City managers looking for reliable, public safety-grade communications and budget-friendly solutions need to look no further than FirstNet,” Ryckman added.
