Barco CTRL Simplifies Multi-Source Monitoring in Azercell’s Security Operations Center

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

Azercell Telecom, Azerbaijan’s largest mobile network operator, chose the Barco CTRL hardware and software platform as the centerpiece of its new Security Operations Center (SOC) in Baku. Thanks to Barco CTRL, Azercell operators now have a single system to display and monitor multiple data sources simultaneously, which ensures they can respond quickly in case of cyber threats.

Azercell is the leading mobile operator in Azerbaijan and a pioneering telecommunications company known for its commitment to technological innovation and customer service excellence. Azercell has been serving the people of Azerbaijan for more than 25 years, providing cutting-edge services and connecting almost five million customers across the nation.

New security operations center

Azercell has an unwavering commitment to safeguarding its critical infrastructure against cyber threats. It’s in that light that the company recently completed the installation of a new Security Operations Center (SOC) and control room in Baku, where a dedicated cyber security team is ensuring effective threat detection, monitoring and response around the clock.

As cyber security monitoring is becoming increasingly complex, the cyber security team is relying on a growing number of tools and applications to collect and oversee threat intelligence and to fend off emerging cyber threats.

Video wall and control room platform

“In our search for control room visualization and monitoring technology, we were looking for a solution that could provide reliable, high-quality visuals and seamless control for a 24/7 operational environment,” says Javid Jabbarli, SOC Team Lead at Azercell. “Barco stood out for its reputation in control room solutions, offering both performance and scalability that met our exact needs.” It was Swiss integrator STV Global, authorized partner of Barco’s control room products and solutions, who advised to bring in Barco.

STV Global proposed to equip the new SOC with Barco’s control room platform Barco CTRL and a KVD-5521C LCD video wall in a 4 by 3 matrix. The Azercell team highly appreciated the intuitive control of Barco CTRL and the seamless integration with the video wall, to show an uninterrupted, balanced image.

Managing multiple sources

The Azercell team of eight operators relies on Barco CTRL to control both the operator desk and the video wall, all in a single environment. The team can now easily manage the multiple data sources and applications on their workstations and video wall in real time, including Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Security, Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), and many more. Since the control room is a highly virtualized environment, the video wall also needed to support Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sources. Barco was the only manufacturer who could offer this option.

With the ever-evolving cyber security landscape, it’s perfectly conceivable that new applications, systems, or even operator seats will be added in the control room mix. Fortunately, a system like Barco CTRL is fully scalable and helps Azercell to grow when needed.

24/7 access to critical data

“Barco CTRL is an all-in-one solution for the operator desk and video wall, that allows us to manage real-time data more efficiently, and that gives us reliable, 24/7 access to critical data,” says Javid Jabbarli. “It enables us to quickly identify cyber security threats and respond accordingly.”
