BIPT Selects RideOnTrack’s CodiTrack for Railway Coverage Verification

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

The Belgian telecommunications regulator adopts on-board IoT measurement technology to enforce operator coverage obligations across the national rail network.

The Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT) has implemented RideOnTrack's CodiTrack solution to support its regulatory oversight of mobile network coverage on Belgian railway lines. As the national telecommunications regulator, BIPT is responsible for verifying that mobile network operators meet their coverage obligations across the country's rail infrastructure.

CodiTrack combines two complementary measurement systems. The rEdge on-board IoT Edge platform is installed directly on passenger trains and captures key network performance indicators, including quality of service metrics, throughput and latency. Alongside this, rMobile measurement devices are deployed inside the carriages to validate the actual user experience from a passenger perspective, recording real-world connectivity quality as experienced on board.

Measurement campaigns are conducted twice a year, providing BIPT with recurring data collection across the Belgian railway network. The resulting data is processed and visualised in the CodiTrack web application, which delivers interactive dashboards and track-based heatmaps that enable the identification of underperforming segments.

The deployment supports BIPT's mission of ensuring a well-regulated, high-quality digital infrastructure throughout Belgium.
