Airbus and SDEC to Explore Satellite Communication Solutions in Malaysia
Under the agreement, both parties will assess the feasibility of deploying non-terrestrial network (NTN) solutions across Malaysia, with Sarawak serving as the central hub using a OneWeb satellite constellation.
Airbus Public Safety and Security has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC), in the presence of Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patingi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The collaboration aims to extend secure connectivity to defence forces, public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) agencies, and critical infrastructure operators working in remote or border regions where standard terrestrial network towers cannot be built.
Under the agreement, both parties will assess the feasibility of deploying non-terrestrial network (NTN) solutions across Malaysia, with Sarawak serving as the central hub using a OneWeb satellite constellation.
Connecting to a Low Earth Orbit satellite network via a local Sarawak hub will allow users to operate Airbus’ communication solutions off-grid. This includes Agnet MCX, Airbus’ multimedia platform for secure push-to-talk, video, and data sharing, as well as satellite backhaul for Airbus TETRA digital radio base stations, enabling reliable voice and data links for tactical units in jungle or border zones. SDEC will contribute its valuable knowledge, capabilities, and infrastructure in developing and operating digital and telecommunications network solutions across Sarawak.
Alain Ruinet, Head of APAC Sales & Programme Delivery at Airbus Public Safety and Security said:
“Partnering with SDEC is key to unlocking non-terrestrial connectivity in Malaysia. By combining their local infrastructure footprint with our mission-critical expertise, we aim to enable operational teams to stay seamlessly connected in the most demanding environments where standard networks simply cannot reach.”
Following the evaluation of technical, operational, and regulatory feasibility over the coming months, both parties intend to progress towards formal commercial and deployment agreements to establish the Sarawak Point of Presence (PoP) and roll out satellite-backed communications services across the region.
