New Zealand Critical Communications Unit Rebrands as SafetyNet Critical Communications Ahead of July Launch.

Formerly operating within New Zealand Police, SafetyNet Critical Communications prepares to extend emergency-grade cellular services to hundreds of public safety organisations across Aotearoa.

A specialist critical communications unit operating within New Zealand Police is set to emerge as an independent entity on 1 July 2025, under the new name SafetyNet Critical Communications.

The rebrand marks a significant milestone for the organisation, which will expand its mission beyond the emergency services sector to serve the broader public safety community across New Zealand.

While the organisation's name is changing, its core purpose remains intact. SafetyNet Critical Communications will continue to apply its expertise in critical communications to support emergency services and other organisations involved in everyday public safety, emergency response and recovery — ensuring that responders and agencies receive the right information at the right time.

The organisation already serves a substantial user base. Nearly 28,000 responders across Hato Hone St John, NZ Police, Wellington Free Ambulance and Fire and Emergency New Zealand currently rely on SafetyNet's Public Safety Network Cellular Roaming, Priority and Network Visibility services. Those same agencies also make use of the organisation's cellular Location Information Services, which play an active role in life-saving operations on a daily basis.
