France Trains Its Next Generation of Fire Service Leaders on the Operational Future Radio Network

Following this initial awareness-raising phase, participants are expected to be progressively involved in successive stages of the programme — from the onboarding process through to full operational implementation.

ACMOSS, the agency responsible for deploying France's Future Radio Network (Réseau Radio du Futur — RRF), hosted a dedicated half-day immersion session on 2 April 2026 for senior firefighter officers enrolled in group leadership training programmes. The event, held in Paris, formed part of a broader day of activities focused on the Parisian civil security environment, organised by the École Nationale Supérieure des Officiers de Sapeurs-Pompiers (ENSOSP).

The session provided participating officers with a comprehensive introduction to the RRF — France's national critical communications infrastructure now in operational service. Structured around three thematic pillars, the programme demonstrated the network's current operational status, outlined the procedures for SDIS organisations to join the programme, and sought to equip future decision-makers with the knowledge necessary to advocate for the system within their respective fire and rescue services.

A Network Built for the Demands of Emergency Operations

Participants engaged with the RRF through a showroom environment showcasing the network's practical applications, followed by a presentation of the Operations Control Centre (OCC). ACMOSS teams elaborated on the critical communications and inter-agency coordination capabilities underpinning the network, which is designed to deliver high-speed, secure, interoperable, resilient, and priority communications for public safety professionals across France.

The three objectives of the half-day session were clearly defined:

  • To demonstrate that the RRF is fully operational and functional.
  • To present the procedures through which departmental services can formally join the programme.
  • To encourage participating officers to act as ambassadors for the RRF within the broader fire service community.

Preparing Future Leaders for a National Rollout

The immersion session reflects a deliberate strategy by ACMOSS to engage with the next generation of fire service leadership at an early stage in their careers. The officers participating in this training will ultimately assume positions of responsibility within Departmental Fire and Rescue Services (Services Départementaux d'Incendie et de Secours — SDIS). In those roles, they will be expected to manage the deployment of the RRF across their operational areas, working in close coordination with institutional stakeholders and the broader emergency services community.

Following this initial awareness-raising phase, participants are expected to be progressively involved in successive stages of the programme — from the onboarding process through to full operational implementation. This phased approach is intended to ensure that the RRF's adoption is not only technically sound but also institutionally embedded, with ownership distributed across the fire and rescue services at the national level.

A Strategic Milestone for France's Public Safety Communications

The RRF represents a major step forward in the modernisation of France's public safety communications infrastructure. By transitioning away from legacy radio systems and towards a broadband-capable, interoperable national network, ACMOSS is positioning emergency services to meet the growing complexity of multi-agency operations and large-scale incident response.

Events such as the 2 April training session underscore that effective technology adoption in the emergency services sector requires sustained investment not only in infrastructure, but in the professional education of those who will lead its deployment. ACMOSS's engagement with ENSOSP and the wider fire officer training community signals a long-term commitment to building the human capacity required for the RRF's successful national rollout.
