ASTRID Enables Mobile Search in Car Crash Recovery System

Source: The Critical Communications Review | Gert Jan Wolf editor

Operator of the Public Safety Communications Network in Belgium, ASTRID, has now ensured that first responders are now able to search in the Car Crasch Recovery System using their mobile device.

Increasingly cars, buses, trucks are equipped with all kinds of modern technologies and safety systems. However, these systems also make it increasingly complex for the emergency services to liberate trapped persons from a vehicle after an accident.

There is a database (Car Crash Recovery System - CCRS) in which care providers can look up information about the location of such components and how to deactivate them, by brand, model and year of construction.

ASTRID has now ensured that first responders in Belgium are now able to search in the Car Crasch Recovery System using their mobile device. In this way first responders can look up information about the location of non-activated airbags, airbag gas cartridges, seatbelt tensioners, etc, and how to deactivate them, by brand, model and year of construction.

In searching the database on the way to and at the incident scene will save precious time ,for the emergency responder as they will now have access to the right information. After all, it is often difficult to determine the precise model when dealing with an accident on the site, since vehicles are often severely torn, and many models with constantly new technology are coming onto the market.

The new CCRS application from ASTRID is currently being tested at the Eupen fire brigade.
