SafetyNet Tests Deployable Cellular Trailer and Drone for Public Safety Communications
SafetyNet, the organisation responsible for delivering New Zealand's Public Safety Network (PSN), has tested a new PSN cellular deployable (PCD) trailer in West Auckland, bringing together members of its Programme Delivery, Product, Design and Innovation teams with representatives from across the public safety sector. The demonstration was held to assess how the trailer could support operational requirements in the field, particularly in circumstances where traditional communications infrastructure is unavailable or compromised.
According to SafetyNet, the test reflects its commitment to working alongside agencies to understand operational challenges and to explore technologies that could help keep responders connected in demanding environments.
The trailer solution operates on either dedicated PSN 1800MHz spectrum or One NZ spectrum, and has been designed for continuous multi-day operation as well as helicopter deployment. The capability has the potential to support a larger number of users across a considerably wider coverage area than existing deployable options.
Alongside the trailer demonstration, attendees observed a tethered drone equipped with Nokia telecommunications technology. The drone remains connected by tether to a ground-based power source and fibre connection, effectively functioning as an elevated antenna that can remain operational for extended periods.
