Multi-Carrier Hybrid Network (RIM): An advanced solution of Leonardo for the interoperability between narrowband and broadband networks

The new Multi-Carrier Hybrid Network (RIM) of Leonardo represents an advanced solution, which ensures the interoperability between narrowband and broadband (e.g. LTE/5G) networks and enables phased service evolution, with the introduction of new services

From hybrid warfare to terrorism, new scenarios and emerging threats, are increasing the need to secure mission critical operations, which, in, turn, is driving the evolution of technology.

In this context, professional communications are facing an important challenge to guarantee the full reliability of mission critical communications for first responders, while progressing towards broadband technologies. Therefore, it is necessary to manage the coexistence of reliable and consolidated narrowband communications with broadband networks. This enables new services and requires high-capacity data transmission, like video communications.

The new Multi-Carrier Hybrid Network (RIM) of Leonardo represents an advanced solution, which Leonardo_Alea (1)ensures the interoperability between narrowband and broadband networks.  Furthermore, the RIM hybrid network enables phased service migration and supports the introduction of new services. This is due to multi-technological infrastructures such as Leonardo's Core Network CSP (Communications Service Platform), which supports integration and full interoperability with LTE/5G systems and allows the seamless adoption of new broadband technologies, which integrate existing and new generations infrastructures, with a uniform  management of operation centres and through the improvement of operational efficiency.

CM 2 (1)The main elements of the RIM, CSP and control room, can also protect against cyber threats by applying the Leonardo solutions for End Points protection, which can provide an early detection of intrusions and perform the most suitable countermeasures.

The RIM network has been already used during the Alpine World Ski Championships, held in 2021 at Cortina. Installed in 12 sites, RIM provided secure and reliable communications based on both narrowband and broadband technologies, for the coordination of security and interventions in case of an emergency.
