As part of the EAS (Extended Area Services) project, 12 of the 292 sites have now progressed to build stage.

This week via social media, ESN announced that 12 EAS sites have now progressed to build stage as part of ESN's commitment to expanding mobile coverage for the UK emergency services.

The EAS project’s primary objective is to facilitate the delivery of ESN coverage within the extended area (the most remote parts of the UK). A secondary objective is to support the wider government policy of improving mobile coverage in remote and rural areas; EAS masts will be built where possible to facilitate the delivery of commercial coverage and the masts will be made available to commercial operators.

Subject to local planning authorities granting planning for lattice mast structures which can host multiple Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), many of these EAS sites are also expected to support commercial coverage, where MNOs express an interest in doing so.

Approximately 292 EAS sites will be required to deliver the coverage. These will be a mix of around 194 new build sites, approximately 18 site shares with other mobile network operators and around 80 Airwave site shares.
