Researchers at Oslo Met believe the 5G network can be used as an emergency network already in 2020, several years earlier than planned.

Norway's new digital emergency network, Notnett is just two years old. The system will provide the police, the fire service and the health service with a safe way of encrypted communications in emergency situations.

The contract with the Network Operator expires in 2026, and last year it was decided that the future Emergency Network should be based on the offering of commercial mobile networks. Researchers now believe that the 5G network can be used in a safe manner within two years from now.

"By 2020, I think the security will be good enough. Meanwhile, we need newer applications that will help us safeguard security and security in a better way than just speech and text messaging, "says Professor Thanh Van Do at OsloMet.

The researchers at Oslo Met (Oslo Metropolitan University) look at how the 5G network can be made safe for police, fire and health, so that it is safe to exchange both voice and data. They expect to have the conclusion ready for next summer.

The Ministry of Justice will start an investigation of next-generation emergency networks next year.
